A dog fight for Premier League title honours
With league titles already wrapped up in France and Germany, the English Premier League crown is going down to the final match day to decide who will win it this season. Champions Manchester City will travel to Leeds on Saturday (April 30) as they aim to fight off Liverpool from the title. Then on Sunday, Tottenham will aim to keep their hopes of a top-four finish on track when they welcome Leicester to the London Stadium.
Event # 1 – EPL, Leeds vs Manchester City
Manchester City will be looking to remain top of the league standing this weekend as they travel to Elland Road to square off against relegation-threatened Leeds United and, as things stand, every game is a must-win for both Manchester City and Liverpool between now and the end of the season. City will enter this crucial away match fresh off the back of one of the most exciting Champions League midweek matches football fans have ever witnessed, against Real Madrid, in which they prevailed 4-3 at home. City are currently a point clear of Liverpool at the top of the table with five matches to play and are aware that a win against Leeds, whom they defeated 7-0 in the reverse fixture earlier this season, would almost guarantee them the title as Liverpool have a tough away match against the in-form Newcastle and victory for the Reds isn’t a certainty.
Leeds aim to escape the danger zone but will have a difficult time against a fired-up Manchester City who are fighting tooth and nail with Liverpool for the league title. The Whites, Leeds are five points clear of the relegation zone but have played a game more than 18th-placed Everton. The big problem for Leeds is that their next three matches are against City, Arsenal, and Chelsea – three of the top five in the league. They will enter this match off the back of a 0-0 draw away to Crystal Palace last weekend, but encouraging for them is the fact that they have collected four points from their last two home matches, beating Norwich and drawing with Southampton.
KEY STATS
● Leeds – are looking to keep three consecutive Premier League clean sheets for the first time since August 2002, the third game then being was a 3-0 home win against Manchester City.
● Manchester City – are looking to complete their first league double over Leeds since 1981-82, a season that saw the Whites relegated from the top flight.
● Both sides – Leeds have lost just two of their last nine home league games against Man City (W6 D1), doing so in consecutive meetings in December 1995 (0-1) and September 2000 (1-2).
The betting tip. City win.
Event # 2 EPL – Tottenham Hotspurs vs Leicester
One of the key battles over the final month of the Premier League season will be for the Champions League places. It iis now a battle between Tottenham and Arsenal with five matches remaining, as Manchester United are out of the race following their crushing defeat to Arsenal last weekend. With that said, one such battle continues this Sunday as Tottenham welcome Leicester to the London Stadium.
Having allowed Arsenal back into the race over the previous two match days, as they have failed to win in back-to-back matches, Tottenham will be desperate to secure all three points at home on Sunday. They head into this match following a frustrating draw against Brentford last weekend and sitting just two points behind Arsenal ahead of this clash, Tottenham’s fate remains in their hands and only a win against Leicester will suffice with the huge North London derby against Arsenal on the horizon.
Leicester are sitting comfortably in the middle of the standing, but there’s little doubt that they had hoped for a better season; now their only chance of playing European football next season will hinge on winning the Europa Conference league. With that said, Leicester seem to be prioritising that competition, as they have failed to win any of their last three league matches, having played out a second straight draw last weekend, 0-0 against Aston Villa at home. Even though Tottenham have the upper hand in this fixture, winning the previous two games, Leicester won on their previous visit to the Tottenham Stadium, a 2-0 victory in December 2020.
KEY STATS
● Tottenham – have won seven of their last 10 Premier League games against Leicester (L3), as many as they had in their previous 21 against them in the competition (D5 L9).
● Leicester – have won just one of their last 11 Premier League away games (D4 L6), with that victory coming at Burnley in March. That 2-0 win was also the Foxes’ only away clean sheet in their last 23 league games on the road.
● Both sides – since their return to the Premier League in 2014, Leicester have conceded more league goals against Tottenham than they have versus any other side (36). Tottenham’s 36 goals against Leicester are also the most they have scored against an opponent in that time.
The betting tip. Tottenham win.
