Hall evades question of future with Boyz
Despite declaring that he will be in the dugout for today’s return-leg Group A Concacaf Nations League game against Suriname, interim Reggae Boyz Head Coach Paul Hall is still yet to address the issue of his resignation, as the possibility exists that the encounter might be his last.
Hall was reported to have told the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) top brass that he would be resigning with immediate effect shortly after the Boyz’s 1-1 stalemate with their Dutch-speaking counterparts in Paramaribo on Saturday.
This while players called for the resignation of General Secretary Dalton Wint in a leaked voicenote in which JFF President Michael Ricketts seemingly supported the calls.
The English-based Hall staved off questions about his pending departure, which is believed to have resulted from his displeasure to the JFF’s constant mismanagement since he was appointed in early December, 2021, following the sacking of then Head Coach Theodore “Tappa” Whitmore.
“I can’t speak about football matters,” Hall told journalists during a virtual press conference on Monday.
“All I know is that I will be there on the sidelines tomorrow (today) giving my all because that’s what we do. It is really important that everybody is behind this team tomorrow, we know how important it is for Jamaica’s football, so, yes, I will be there tomorrow 150 per cent,” he declared.
Hall went even further to assure Jamaican fans of his commitment, while still refusing to confirm if he will be staying on for the long haul.
“If Paul Hall was a brand you would never question that commitment and I will say that about the players as well, because the way they have grown, and you don’t get to see behind the scenes and so on, but when they came back to the changing room before the game we were together and that was a committed group of people and I want to congratulate [them] because they have shown some serious resilience. So the fans don’t need to question my commitment, my country came calling and I’ve always been there,” Hall stated.
At one point, he even hinted at the possibility that extending his tenure will depend largely on the fan support for today’s game scheduled for 8:00 pm at the National Stadium.
“I want the supporters to come out to the game tomorrow and show us that they’re on our side. Our players will react to your presence and that provides certainty for us,” Hall said.
“I have got no thoughts apart from this game tomorrow. I want the public to show me that they would like me here by showing their support and coming through because it’s really hard to refuse when you know you’ve got people behind you,” he added.
However, up to late Monday there were doubts the game would be played as players threatened to boycott training unless Wint stepped aside. The players did report to the National Stadium last evening, but arrived late for their training slot which was scheduled for between 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm. Suriname was due for an 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm workout.
A statement said to be from the players expressed their discontent at the constant “lack of respect, transparency and communication” from the JFF hierarchy.
The Boyz and Suriname are currently on one point each in the three-team standing from where the top two teams will secure spots in the next Concacaf Gold Cup.
Jamaica are scheduled to face group favourites Mexico at the National Stadium on June 14.
