MediaTek’s gunning for the high end of the Chromebook market, and this time, it’s all about Chromebook AI performance. Its new Kompanio Ultra chip isn’t just another spec bump. It’s a massive upgrade over its previous models.
The numbers look solid on paper: 50 TOPS of AI horsepower, 3.62GHz Arm Cortex-X925 CPU, and a sleek 3nm build. But specs are just the hook. What matters here is intent. MediaTek wants Chromebooks to stop being the punchline in conversations about real productivity.
What you’re really getting is something that turns AI-enhanced tools—from transcription to real-time automation—into offline, secure, on-device features. This means there’s no cloud, which also means no lag and less waiting around for things to happen.
They’ve tuned this for multitasking and media, too, with support for two 4K external displays, Hi-Fi audio, and Wi-Fi 7 baked in. It’s a setup that deserves serious consideration, especially if your workflow has been stuck in Chrome tab purgatory.
And yes, battery life should hold up. MediaTek has a track record of squeezing power out of less, and the 3nm process plus smarter power management means you can expect long sessions without desperately eyeing the charger.
The question isn’t whether this chip can perform. It’s whether Chromebook makers will actually build machines around it that deserve the power.
